Images

The collection of poems for adult readers Images (Slike) was published in 1912. In her Autobiography, Ivana explains how she came to abandon her practice of writing for children. Being painfully aware that “writing does not agree with the duties of a woman”, Ivana began writing and publishing her work only after she recognised it as part of her duties as a mother – in other words, when she decided she would write for her children. A collection of poetry for adults is certainly a departure from that principle and, in a sense, constitutes Ivana's admission that her desire to write overpowers the guilt caused by her dismissal of “women's duties”. Furthermore, in her Autobiography she states that, up until that moment (1916), this was her favourite work.

The book consists of eight poems which Ivana, in the introduction to the collection, describes as powerful impression inspired by certain sights, which she wished to preserve in writing. All the “images” in the collection are somehow linked to nature and inspired by changes and sights in nature (particularly rivers and other water surfaces): ice on the surface of the river, dawn, the morning peace by the river, night-time movement of animals through the forest, night-time storms, etc.
