A Book for Youth

A Book for Youth (Knjiga omladini) was published in 1923 by the Association for Promoting Children's Literature. The youth in the title refers to the intended adolescent reader (i.e. secondary school students), although some of the topics are not in accordance with the contemporary understanding of youth literature. The book opens with a lengthy essay entitled "To Youth, about Ideals" in which the author lists the ideals she wishes to convey to her readers: patriotism, honesty, compassion, creativity and beauty. In addition, she discusses the “new” art which, in her opinion, dismisses the principle of beauty, a principle which she perceives as the key to all art. The essay is followed by a series of prose texts and poems. The overall tone of the book is somewhat pessimistic, even anxiety-ridden; exalted and at times pathetic verses provide a contrast to the said pessimism. It is also important to point out Christian philosophy as a fundamental world view the book promotes.
