Fables and Fairy Tales

The collection of tales Fables and Fairy Tales (Basne i bajke) was published posthumously in 1943 by the Croatian Publishing and Bibliographic Institute, with illustrations by Vladimir Žedrinski. There is no indication of the identity of the editor, or the origin of the texts. The collection contains five fairy tales and nine verse fables. Two of the fairy tales and four of the fables were published in magazines during the author's lifetime, which suggests that the book was edited with the help of someone who had access to Ivana's manuscripts.

The book contains eight Aesopian fables: The Dog and the Wolf, The Lion and the Hog, Two Goats, The Raven and the Fox, The Monkey and the Dolphin, Aesop and the Frogs, The Frogs Elect a King, and The Too Big Little House. The ninth fable in the collection – The Dervish, the Little Bird, and the Benefactor-Hawk – is Ivana's original creation. In the fables, Ivana continues to explore 'universal' themes, such as honour, heroism, freedom and patriotism.

The fairy tales feature typical fairy-tale motifs and characters (giants, monsters, talking animals, marvellous transformations), as well as characters typical of Ivana's body of work, such as kikimori – tiny creatures that live in holes in the rocks, or Sitivrat – the lord of all life on earth. In addition, the themes and plots reflect Ivana's overall literary interests (Christian philosophy, the meaning of life, community, the conflict between the “big” and “small” in which the “small” is always triumphant, the symbolism of the child, etc.).
