Jaša Dalmatin, Viceroy of Gujarat

Jaša Dalmatin, Viceroy of Gujarat (Jaša Dalmatin, potkralj Gudžerata) was published in 1937 by the Royal Publishing House Vasić, in the Illustrated Books series. Jaša Dalmatin is an adolescent, part adventure novel about a young man who lived in the area of Dubrovnik in the 16th century, was taken into slavery, sold to Constantinople, and eventually ended up in India where he became the Viceroy of Gujarat State. The life of Jaša was the topic of a study published by Vladimir Mažuranić, Ivana's father in 1925, entitled Melek Jaša of Dubrovnik in India, from 1480 to 1528, and his predecessors in Islam ten centuries ago (Melek „Jaša Dubrovčanin“ u Indiji god. 1480.-1528. i njegovi prethodnici u Islamu prije deset stoljeća, Zbornik kralja Tomislava, Rad JAZU, Zagreb).

Ivana's novel portrays Jaša as a noble, strong, talented and extraordinary young man, a visionary and a builder whose incredible success in life is closely linked with his Dalmatian origins. The tale of Jaša Dalmatin is full of adventures, which often take place in exotic settings, and seemingly impossible tasks which Jaša always manages to perform (in accordance with generic conventions).

The novel remains incomplete: the second part consists mostly of notes which indicate how Ivana intended to finish the story. Unfortunately, she died before she could do so.
